Intellectual Disability Services

Intellectual disabilities are more common than you may think. Nearly one-in-ten U.S. families have a loved one who is affected by an intellectual disability of some kind. Working with and raising these individuals takes patience and skill, which is why we offer support with training and services designed to help you as a caregiver and those in your care.

Who is eligible for help?

Intellectual disabilities are typically identified at a young age when it becomes apparent a child is learning and developing at a slower pace than their peers. Some of these signs include becoming mobile later than other children, difficulty learning to speak and communicate, difficulty with problem-solving, or the inability to understand and follow social norms

The American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) defines an individual as having an intellectual disability if they meet the following criteria:

  • IQ around 70 or as high as 75
  • Significant limitations in two or more adaptive areas needed to live and work normally, i.e. conceptual, social and practical skills
  • Evidence of the condition before the age of 18

Our services are available to anyone who meets these criteria and is two years of age or older.

North Carolina Services

Respite Services

Respite services provide a break for primary caregivers, and they can be scheduled or provide support in an emergency. Respite may include in- and out-of-home services and can include overnight, weekend care, or emergency care.

Plan of Care Development

We assist care managers and treatment teams to develop a plan of care, also called an ISP. If an individual receives state-funded services, our Resource Coordinator will work with the treatment team to create a plan of care. In the plan of care, individuals set goals for living in the community and determine what supports they need to meet their goals. The plan of care lists NC Innovations Waiver program services and other NC Medicaid services and informal supports.

Monitoring Services

The Resource Coordinator is responsible for monitoring the person-centered plan of care and overall health and safety.
